Fight Fires Using the Proper Fire Extinguisher

By admin | Dec 26, 2008

It would be difficult for a body shop or mechanical shop to survive long without readily accessible firefighting equipment.  But when a blaze breaks out, just any old fire extinguisher won’t do.  Fires that erupt in auto repair facilities are most often solvent-based fires which extinguish best with dry chemical.

GoJak Dollies Lift and Carry Crashed Cars Easily

By admin | Dec 5, 2008

GoJak® is an automotive tool no body shop should be without. Simply put, GoJak® allows disabled or crashed cars to be moved with ease – each tire riding on a dolly made maneuverable by four casters. Connecticut bodyman, Al Coccaro, inventor of GoJak® calls it “the faster caster system.” What makes GoJak® fast and separates it from other tire dollies is the built-in bi-directional linear foot-action ratchet that jacks a car off the ground allowing it to be moved on the dollies in any direction - even sideways - to improve body shop traffic flow.

Waste Oil Heaters Warm Auto Repair Shops Cost Effectively

By admin | Nov 11, 2008

When money is tight for auto repair shops and dealerships it makes little sense to pay for removal of waste oil that could be used as a source of heat.

Waste oil furnaces not only save shops money on Winter heating bills, they are great tools to assist shops in recycling efforts.

It has been said a waste oil heater will provide a return on investment (ROI) unmatched by most other tools and equipment found in an auto repair shop or body shop.

With Winter setting in and energy costs soaring, it only makes sense for auto mechanics and hobbyists to consider waste oil heaters to warm their respective repair shops and auto service facilities. Waste oil is plentiful and free. Best of all, waste oil heaters have evolved to burn waste oil cleanly, with limited odor, and they require little maintenance.

A waste oil heater is sometimes referred to as a waste oil furnace. Waste oil burners are usually mounted in a fixed location. However, there are portable units on the market that are worth a look if mobility is a concern. Most units, fixed or mobile, will burn petroleum waste as thin as fuel oil or as thick as gear lube. Some new high-end units also burn vegetable oil waste.

If the advantages of a waste oil heater are peaking your interest, make sure you look for one that is EPA approved. The better waste oil furnaces have stainless steel heat chambers that carry 10 year warranties.

Automotive Lifts: Aftermarket Parts May Void Factory Warranties

By admin | Apr 24, 2007

test descriptionNot unlike cars that are repaired in auto body shops everyday where use of imitation parts can void factory warranties, warranties on automotive lifts can suffer the same fate of cancellation when aftermarket parts are used for repairs instead of genuine original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) parts.

Choosing the correct replacement part for an automotive lift is an important matter – a matter of proper fit, function, safety and performance.  The best bet for getting it right the first time without compromising the integrity and reliability of the equipment is selecting parts that are built and/or endorsed by the original lift manufacturer and sold by its local factory-authorized distributor.

It may be difficult to tell the difference in the quality of replacement parts for automotive lifts by simply looking at them.  But, just as they do in the flawed process of copying auto body panels for cars, counterfeiters reverse engineer lift parts, so they are  not likely to fit with precision.  In addition, they oftentimes build them from inferior quality materials that may not reflect the latest design improvements and alterations the lift manufacturer made to enhance its products.

Advertisements for lift service parts are no less confusing.  Despite the Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act that was signed into law by President Bush in 2006 that makes it illegal to misrepresent third-party built parts as  genuine replacement parts, labels may still mislead many parts buyers.  For example, an aftermarket part for a Rotary Lift may state that it is “Made for Rotary Lift Model XXX.” giving the impression that the Madison, Indiana-based company, Rotary Lift, has approved the product and sanctioned its sale when such is not the case.

With reliability of the equipment and safety of workers and cars to consider (not to mention the bottleneck caused by the downtime of having broken equipment), it is imperative to choose replacement parts wisely.  Let’s face it.  What’s the advantage in buying an automotive lift built to exacting ANSI standards only to have it cheapened and weakened by repairs using poor-fitting, unapproved aftermarket parts?

It is equally imperative to have the genuine parts installed by a qualified service professional who has been factory trained and certified. Failure to do so could result in termination of lift warranties as well.
